Huda held responsible for plight of Borabanda people
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda) is responsible for the plight of the residents of Rajiv Nagar, Borabanda who are left in the lurch whenever it pours.
For the past three days their houses have been flooded with excess water from the Maisamma cheruvu and it will take at least 10 to 15 days for the situation to improve.
Locals said they had purchased lands not knowing that the plots lie under the lake bed.

Most locals are migrant workers from Krishna and Guntur districts and had bought the lands on the outskirts of the city as they were cheaper.
Local patwari, Pandari, said the lands were or agricultural plots on lake beds that are bound to get submerged if the water rises. The lands were sold some 20 years ago by a few individuals who are not traceable anymore.
When houses were being built here, the government had not warned the residents. Instead they were provided with power and water connection and to some extent roads were laid following political pressures, revenue department officials said.
However, the problem came to light during August-2000 floods when the area got submerged for the first time after the colony came into existence. Huda, which took over development of the lake, allowed the residents to stay and also decided to construct a bund to prevent water from Maisamma from entering residential area. Some tried to construct houses in the lake area but they were demolished by the revenue officials. A few houses that remained submerged are in the lake area which is under the control of Huda.
The Huda constructed a bund separating the residential colonies from the lake but it is nearly three feet shorter than the actual proposal. "It was proposed that a bund will be constructed to enable storage of water up to the full tank level of 68 ft. However, the bund was 65 ft only," said a revenue official. To make things worse, the vent that releases water into the surplus nala was also closed.
